September Calendar Jewish Holidays

Rosh Hashanah, also known as the Jewish New Year, falls on the first and second days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which usually corresponds to September on the Gregorian calendar. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal for Jewish people around the world. Traditional customs include blowing the shofar (a ram’s horn), eating symbolic foods like apples dipped in honey for a sweet new year, and attending synagogue services.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is considered the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. It occurs on the 10th day of Tishrei, following Rosh Hashanah. This solemn day is marked by fasting, prayer, and repentance as Jews seek forgiveness for their sins. Many Jews spend the day in synagogue, engaging in introspection and seeking to make amends with others. Yom Kippur concludes with a final blast of the shofar, signaling the end of the day of repentance.

Sukkot

Sukkot, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, begins on the 15th day of Tishrei and lasts for seven days (eight days outside of Israel). During this holiday, Jews build and dwell in temporary structures called sukkahs to commemorate the Israelites’ time in the wilderness. Sukkot is a time of joy, celebration, and gratitude for the harvest. Traditional customs include waving the lulav and etrog, eating meals in the sukkah, and reciting special blessings.
